Hawaii in Winter: Day 3

On our third day in Hawaii we visited Pearl Harbor. Anthony and I had been there back in 2007, but we opted to see it again. It's truly an amazing feeling to be on a battefield. It's not a "good" feeling, it's just this overwhelming feeling that you are small, and that this place is very huge. I mean that figuratively, and literally. Water also kind of freaks me out, so being out on open water just adds to it for me. Anyway, this is just my opinion on the matter.

When you go to Pearl Harbor you can see three memorials, two museums, and a submarine. We went on the USS Arizona (the battleship over which the memorial is built) and the USS Bowfin. The Arizona is incredible because you are standing on this huge memorial looking down into the water at the remains of the battleship. Thousands of men are resting below. Amazingly enough, many of the ships that were bombed in 1941 were restored and put back into action. A feat like that was unheard of at that time.

The oddest part of it all is the overwhelming smell of oil. Everywhere you look there is oil leaking from the tanker of the ship. It's all over the water in big purple clouds.

The bowfin was impressive, though I've been on a few ships here in the Oakland and Richmond shipyards. They called her "The Avenger" because she fought the Japanese after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I have no clue what we did after we got back from this long, tiring day. We probably ate a huge lunch and sat on the beach.
